Seeru

In 2016 when Vijay Sethupathi went all guns blazing, there was a damp squib in the name of ‘Rekka’ that was not the kind of movie Vijay Sethupathi would have preferred to do then. There is an obvious connection between ‘Rekka’ and ‘Seeru’. And, that is, director Rathna Siva. Unfortunately, this bit of trivia struck me only after I watched 'Seeru' thanks to Wikipedia. How come such directors manage to survive when filmmakers of today want to get more subtle and sensible by the day?

‘Seeru’ starts with a scene where 2 young women traveling on a highway get pulled aside by a few goons who dress like cops. They are about to get molested. One of them circulates an SOS through a WhatsApp voice message. The voice message gets a reply. Yes, it was from our hero, Manimaran (Jiiva). As soon as the women listen to the message, they start their hymns about our hero (even until then he is a stranger for them). He zips to the spot in his bike, pounces on the men and the introduction fight for the hero happens. I was hoping that it would all be a dream for a comic hero intro. No, it wasn’t. The filmmaker was serious! I knew right then that my ticket had gone down the drain.

The insanity doesn’t stop there. The local politician clashes with our hero. In an attempt to eliminate him he hires a deadly hitman - Malli (Varun, thanks to producer Isari Velan). When he arrives at Manimaran’s house to kill him, he finds Manimaran’s sister undergoing labor pain. He admits her to the hospital and she delivers a baby. Realizing this, Manimaran calls up Malli and asks him to come to kill him as he is overjoyed with his help (!!??).

Upon his sister’s wish, when Manimaran visits Chennai to find and bring Malli (yes, the insanity continues), he finds out that Malli is in bigger trouble. Then, there comes a stretch where they yap about women empowerment with an episode that looks like another tedious film with last decade’s ‘Amul baby’, Navdeep playing the bad guy with a long hair!

In between all these insanities, the director has managed to squeeze in a dumb heroine, Vasuki (Riya Suman), whose hobby is to kick a row of bikes parked at a theater and enjoy the domino effect! She does that and more, like visiting the men’s restroom ‘by chance’ and getting locked up with the hero in the same cubicle!

Well, what can I say? It was a vile mess where Perarasu meets Hari while visiting Suraj. The movie was a horrible one, not only for us but also for Jiiva and others who were part of it. Hopefully, they realize it soon!

Verdict: Horrible!
