What if you are made to wait indefinitely at a restaurant after you've placed your order? Of course, your hunger grows and over time turns into hunger pangs; after some time, your anger kicks in, and then that gets reflected on the waiter, and then you may even leave the restaurant. And finally, you may end up eating nothing as your appetite dies down.
Gautham Menon's 'Enai Noki Paayum Thotta' that was announced more than three years back has been lying in the cans for a couple of years due to financial and legal troubles. Though the interest in the movie watered down, the film's songs have found a special place among the audiences. A warm welcome to 'Dharbhuka' Siva, the music director!!
Even the 'Visiri' song's video was released, and that created some buzz. As always, GVM had his trademark touches, and an actor like Dhanush at the helm can only elevate the expectations for the movie.
There was a considerable cheer combined with a flurry of whistles and claps when GVM's name appeared during the title. The fan frenzy for a director is a very healthy trend for any movie industry, and GVM has etched his mark since the early 2000s with his class and style.
ENPT's plot is another puzzle made up of Gautham's familiar blocks. It was more in line with his last film, 'Acham Enbathu Madamaiyada.' The girl falls in love with the guy. They both are madly in love. Then, the criminal element comes in for a separation. It's from the heroine's side. She is trapped, and he has to save her. Of course, other half-baked subplots made one disengage with the film.
The movie was filled with monologues and voice-overs from Dhanush that it turned out like a cricket commentary or a documentary about the happenings. Some exciting bits appeared like a flash in the pan. For instance, the scene where Dhanush recalls how an astrologer predicted his life expectancy to be 90 years when he is at gunpoint.
However, the technique was overdone and got diluted after a point. The romance and chemistry between the lead pair were refreshing for some time, at least in the first half. Megha Akash's supposed-to-be debut movie was released after she is a couple of films old. She portrays the character of a movie heroine who is forced into the film industry. She does act up in the film inside this film. For this movie, it works well.
The villain, Senthil Veerasamy, who has done some insignificant roles until now, has got a meaty role where he brings out the 'beast mode' from Dhanush. Like other supporting characters, we don't get to know him precisely on what he does to be this bad. In one of the scenes, he asks Dhanush whether he thought that he was just another dumb film producer? That's about it. We don't go any further down.
Sasikumar's role was also shady. His character's backstory was narrated through shadows. And then, when he gets introduced, there was a brilliant line in the voice-over that compared Sasikumar's situation with that of 'Pokkiri' story. That's about it. We don't get to the details. Also, the bad cop was a dud. He carries out a public shootout with just a cloth mask around his face.
And then, there was Sunaina in the mix. Her's was also a very generic role that could have been pulled off by any other pretty face. The proceedings in the second half transformed into a very generic action movie from a breezy romance in the first half. In the end, we get the 'heroic save' wherein the bullet graces an object that the hero carries instead of piercing through his chest. Of course, the hero wins and gets the girl with a happy ending.
Gautham has recycled the same plot points and style elements from many of his previous films as he always does. The problem here is that the proportion has gotten messy, and as a result, the screenplay became pungent.
Of course, the movie could have released as a music album as GVM, like his previous films, has done full justice. Though there was nothing novel about the picturization, something stood out in all the songs, though they were very tightly packed in the first half!
The movie can be watched for die-hard fans of GVM who still believe that the director can dish out something new and something more romantic. For others, wait for it to reach your favorite streaming platform!
