Mammootty was born on September 7, 1951, in Chandiroor, Alappuzha district, Kerala, India. He was the eldest son of Ismail and Fatima. His father was a farmer and his mother was a homemaker. Mammootty had a strong interest in acting from a young age and participated in school and college dramas.

Mammootty started his acting career in 1971 with the film "Anubhavangal Paalichakal" but gained recognition with his roles in the late 1970s and early 1980s.

 He emerged as a leading actor in Malayalam cinema during the 1980s and 1990s and has since appeared in over 400 films across various languages including Malayalam, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Hindi, and English.

He is known for his versatility and has portrayed a wide range of roles, from intense dramas to comedic roles. Some of his notable films include "Oru Vadakkan Veeragatha," "Mathilukal," "Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar," "Pazhassi Raja," and "Peranbu."
